Why are there two monsters in Gwen Arthur's office?
She's just a therapist who likes reality TV, junk food, and not getting hit on by Mel, the werewolf PI who works in her building. By all accounts, these two creeps should want as little to do with her as she does with them. And yet somehow she finds herself standing next to her best friend Chloe, being asked to help rescue some missing kids, by two creatures she thought existed only in her nightmares.
She's gotta do it, right? What sort of jerk would just ignore a bunch of kidnapped children? Not this kind of jerk. Gwen may be a gluttonous coward whose only skill is reading the emotions of those around her, but she can shape up long enough to help save the lives of innocent kids. Even if it does force her to face her own fears, treat Mel like a decent person, and stop cramming cake in her mouth long enough to get it done.

I don’t know what to make of Gwen and Mel’s relationship. Mostly played for laughs, they do seem to connect — as long as Mel wears the emotional dampener that allows Gwen to stand him. Why do his undamped emotions bother empathic Gwen so much? It is more than dislike, his mind makes her physically ill at times. I did like how they worked together and following them as they attempt to do detective work was always amusing.
Finally, there was a scene at the end involving an enchanted fork that made me laugh. It was perhaps the best scene in the book. Mixed Feelings was worth reading just to get to that hilarious altercation. The author left plenty of loose ends dancing for the sequel, but Mixed Feelings was still wrapped up nicely as a story.
I enjoyed Mixed Feelings enough to put the sequel on my to-read list. I recommend it to urban fantasy fans who enjoy light, humorous stories in the genre. I give Mixed Feelings 4.5 on the Reader’s Hollow scale.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
I'm Olivia and I write Urban Fantasy that doesn't suck. I don't bother with angsty love triangles or imperfectly perfect women who can do no wrong. My main characters don't pull powers out of their butts at the last second, don't get fawned over by every strapping, hot-ass monster in the vicinity, and they definitely get told when they're being dimwits.
I try to be inclusive, realistic (insofar as you can be when you write about werewolves, mercenaries, fairies, and a cake-addicted empath), and entertaining. If you like silly and sarcastic, fun and farce, check me out!
I live just outside of Seattle with a clowder of cats and a stink of litterboxes. I enjoy vexing cats, taking long walks, eating vegan food, cooking vegan food, and watching cheesy, big budget movies where people answer questions like, "Who should we call?" with a gruff and overly serious, "Everyone." I also enjoy making up collective nouns for things that don't already have them, like a spootle of Ruperts and a stink of litterboxes.

A quiet little mountain town is hiding a big problem. When the townsfolk of Raven's Peak start acting crazy, Abigail Dressler is called upon to find out what is happening. She uncovers a demonic threat unlike any she's ever faced and finds herself in a fight just to stay alive.
She rescues Haatim Arison from a terrifying fate and discovers that he has a family legacy in the supernatural that he knows nothing about. Now she's forced to protect him, which is easy, and also trust him if she wants to save the townsfolk of Raven's Peak. Trust, however, is considerably more difficult for someone who grew up living on the knife's edge of danger.
Can they discover the cause of the town's insanity and put a stop to it before it is too late?

There are horror elements to the story, but I felt it fit more as an urban fantasy because of the build up to the secret world full of organizations that are out to stop the demons from taking over.
The prologue was really interesting and touched a bit on the characters, but ultimately, it felt like a glimpse into book two. At least that's how I felt at the end. I thought maybe we would end up meeting the character or he'd be more realized in the book. That aside, it opened up a window to what we might expect, which, if I'm being honest ended up being far more interesting than I originally thought.
Haatim immediately makes himself personable to the reader. He's a man seeking a purpose in life. He's had plenty of obsessions to keep him busy in the past and is trying to rekindle that love for doing something that's special to him. When a blogging/mystery opportunity falls in his lap I don't think he quite expects how deep he might fall into a mystery. The pacing was steady at first, but it didn't really grab me until half way through. Suddenly, a whole new world is opening up and the evil is being focused on more than Haatim's attempts to understand his new companion, Abigail.
I liked how the two characters played off each other in the end. It was a solid friendship where their personalities -- though very different -- could have fun with one another, and the reader. There was action, tough situations, and and interesting backstory to Abigail.
I felt the book really started about half way in, but appreciated the character building that took place in the beginning. I'd recommend this to fans of Supernatural or The Preacher. The action even felt movie-like. The world behind the demonic possessions and the demon's influence on our lives was a lot of fun to learn about.

Series: The Hayven Series #1
There is no chosen one in this story.
Avery Gray was just in the wrong place at the wrong time and happened to make a decision that altered her future forever. It happens to all of us every day.
Avery is a size twelve university student with a penchant for dry humour, and she’s as normal as they come. Up until now, the biggest choice she’s had to make was glasses or contacts? At the moment, it’s stay and save, or leave and be saved.
Allow me to explain. One rainy afternoon, Avery had to make a choice: go through the alleyway or around it. Two possible options. One would have had her future continue on as planned, the other would ensure that her future never remained the same again. She unknowingly went with the latter.
But change is not always bad. Avery meets Theodore-James Connors, an enigmatic young man who takes her to Hayven, a city separated from the rest of the world, where only gifters – ordinary people with extra-ordinary gifts – can go. She soon finds herself in a close-knit group of friends she’d never have imagined herself in. Friends who are diverse in every possible way, from their ethnic backgrounds, to their personalities, from their gifts, to their life stories. Friends who make her laugh, who make her cry, who make her think and who make her…her.
However, change is not always good. The beautiful, golden city of Hayven has its dark side – Cliders. Gifters turned rogue, aka, Cliders are determined to aid fallen Clider, Madrina, return to rule Hayven. They will stop at nothing to make that happen, including harming those Ava has grown to love.
Again, Ava is faced with a choice: spend her days finding a way to inhibit Madrina’s return, or walk away. After all, she isn’t the chosen one. Yet, there exists a third option – rig the future itself and make it work for her.

Series: Hiro Hattori Novels/Shinobi Mysteries
Genre: Historical Mystery
Autumn, 1565: When an actor’s daughter is murdered on the banks of Kyoto’s Kamo River, master ninja Hiro Hattori and Portuguese Jesuit Father Mateo are the victim’s only hope for justice.
As political tensions rise in the wake of the shogun’s recent death, and rival warlords threaten war, the Kyoto police forbid an investigation of the killing, to keep the peace–but Hiro has a personal connection to the girl, and must avenge her. The secret investigation leads Hiro and Father Mateo deep into the exclusive world of Kyoto’s theater guilds, where they quickly learn that nothing, and no one, is as it seems. With only a mysterious golden coin to guide them, the investigators uncover a forbidden love affair, a missing mask, and a dangerous link to corruption within the Kyoto police department that leaves Hiro and Father Mateo running for their lives.
“In The Ninja’s Daughter, Susan Spann’s poetic voice brilliantly captures the societal disparities, political intrigues, and martial conflicts of sixteenth-century Japan through the persevering efforts of ninja detective Hiro Hattori to solve a murder authorities consider of no consequence.” -JEFFREY SIGER, International Bestselling Author
5x5 for Mystery
The whole mystery of the death was almost a parting gift when it came to the new direction that the characters were about to take. I felt the killer to be more obvious this round but, it wasn't exactly the murder I was interested in.
Revisiting Hiro and Father Mateo was a delight. Their comfort with each other and how they play off one another is still fantastic. They are a curious duo and with some of the colourful side characters such as Ana and Luis, the story is always entertaining.
Like I said before it wasn't the murder that I was interested in. Sides are starting to shift within the city and when Hiro and Father Mateo were ordered to not go on with their investigation into the death of a strong-willed young woman, I knew right away that something was up. Since the last book I knew that this one would likely be a transition into a new setting. The murder took front and center, but for me, it was almost a subplot. It also pushed the two into a new stage of the story. Maybe I'll finally understand why Father Mateo is so important and needs the protection. I look forward to finding out later.
The mystery was well played out and I liked how we got to see a new side to the Japanese culture -- this time it was about actors. They seem to abide different rules than some of the other people we'd met in books previous. Also, they made to be terrific liars, and Hiro has always been very good at sniffing them out. This time, he had some trouble now and then.
I have enjoyed this series very much. The brilliant mysteries that Spann puts into play are always a giant puzzle that keeps the reader's interest. She also has a way of creating a unique setting with her characters. The research that goes into each of the novels is always astounding and I always find that I learn something new. I can't wait for the next book!

A family is shaken to its core after the mysterious disappearance of a teenage boy in this eerie tale from the author of A Head Full of Ghosts.
“A Head Full of Ghosts scared the living hell out of me, and I’m pretty hard to scare,” raved Stephen King about Paul Tremblay’s previous novel, which received widespread critical acclaim. Now Tremblay returns with another disturbing tale just as powerful and unsettling.
Late one summer night, Elizabeth Sanderson receives the devastating news that every mother fears: her thirteen-year-old son, Tommy, has vanished without a trace in the woods of a nearby state park.
The search isn’t yielding any answers, and Elizabeth and her eleven-year-old daughter, Kate, struggle to comprehend Tommy’s disappearance. Feeling helpless and alone, their sorrow is compounded by anger and frustration. Neither the state nor local police have uncovered any leads. Josh and Luis, the friends who were the last to see Tommy before he vanished, may not be telling the whole truth about that night in Borderland State Park, when they were supposedly hanging out at a landmark they have renamed Devil’s Rock.
Living in an all-too-real nightmare, Elizabeth is wholly unprepared for the strange series of events that follow. She believes a wraithlike apparition of Tommy materializes in her bedroom, while Kate and other local residents claim to see a shadowy figure peering through their windows in the dead of night. Then, random pages torn from Tommy’s journals begin to mysteriously appear—entries that reveal an introverted teenager obsessed with the phantasmagoric; the loss of his father, killed in a drunk-driving accident a decade earlier; a folktale involving the devil and the woods of Borderland; the coming zombie “pocketclips”; and a horrific incident that Tommy believed connected them all.
As the search grows more desperate, and the implications of what happened become more ominous and sinister, no one is prepared for the shocking truth about that night at Devil’s Rock.
Tremblay deftly blends literary fiction, psychological suspense, and supernatural horror into an absorbing tale that illuminates a parent’s darkest fears . . . and an adolescent’s darkest secrets. Eerie, thought-provoking, and soul-shattering, Disappearance at Devil’s Rock will haunt you long after Tommy’s final journal entry is read.
