Saved world from evil goddess? Not so check.
Cora Riley assumed when she joined the FBI’s Supernatural Cases Division that she’d be dismantling Otherworld treachery alongside Jack Alexander, the storied Agent 97 who guided her through the underworld. Instead, she’s filing reports for Sofi Strella, a smart-mouthed agent ten years her junior.
When Jack finally does make contact, it’s not for sidestepper training, a quiet drink, or even an apology; it’s to investigate a magical narcotic that’s boosting supernatural belief to dangerous levels.
The case leads to the realm of Faerie, where Jack encounters an old flame and an even older enemy, both demanding his allegiance. As he battles the entanglements of his past, Cora continues the mission, ultimately facing the eerily-familiar Queen Mab, who wields a legendary blade in the name of Eris, the mad goddess of chaos.
Cora has moved up in the world and gained a new and relatively important job when it comes to dealing with the supernatural. She's lost some of her sarcastic spunk from what I remembered in the first book, but she's also thrust out of her comfort zone. I was also happy to learn something significant about Cora that was only hinted at in Book One.
I liked the whole idea of crossing into an alternative world. Their primary goal being to stop the distribution of a magical drug. It's a fantastical place of fairies, herds of unicorns, shifting landscapes and poisonous beauty. Nothing was predictable here and I loved the description used with the new world.
My only twitch would be the distracting flip flop between first and third person. Instead of reading the story I'd be trying to figure out which character I was witnessing. The author isn't cryptic about it, but I was temporarily withdrawn from the story to figure out who was talking.
The Transmutation of Cora Riley
Overall I was satisfied with the with story. There's relationship tension between Cora and Jack as well as introductions to new, complicated characters. I was also pleased to learn a bit more about Jack's past.
The next book promises to be a magical clash of worlds. If these last two book are any hint, it'll be a chaotic rollercoaster.
