My friends and strangers often ask me this â where do you get your ideas? Well, the question should really be where donât I get my ideas? Pretty much any news item, funny story, face book post or long wait at the DMV can be inspiration for me. Did someone die in an unusual way?
Are the police investigating a missing person case with strange clues left behind? Did the guy in front of me at the grocery store have a strange accent, or did he purchase an unusual combination of items? Bleach and contractor bags? My mind starts racing.
Maybe the customer standing in front of me is part of a kidnapping ring and something just went horribly bad? Heâs racing to clean up the scene and get rid of the body. Or the news story about a missing girl who left a cryptic note. People who die by strange means always peak my interest. Are the police trying to figure out if itâs suicide or murder? Did someone seem to disappear into thin air?
And even mundane things may catch my interest. The guy from the car wash suddenly doesnât work there anymore. A poison tastes like something sweet. How would you feed it to someone without their knowing? How do I get my bad guy to get the murder victim alone? Who opens the door to someone they donât know?
At dinner, my husband and two sons become sounding boards. Would you trust someone who did this? What kind of cake should I use? What if someone else eats a slice? What if the wrong person dies? What if that is the mystery?
