The zombie apocalypse begins the same night your stripper-girlfriend skips town with the money you owe your drug dealer. Fortunately, you know a place you and your best (and only) friend Frankenstein can hide out – a marijuana grow-op in the hinterlands of rural British Columbia, presided over by a psychopathic evangelist who calls herself the Angel of Death. Go ahead, take a toke and relax. Everything’s going to work out fine
Kezzie of Babylon, written by Jamie Mason, is an interesting read that will keep you reading it until the very bloody end. The first person narrative follows Zack, an unlucky weed-smoking junkie that is forced to leave town due to a deal gone wrong. His companion, aptly named Frankenstein, joins him on his quest to find the “Perfect Hippie Goddess”. What I liked about this tale was that it didn’t make you wait for the action and the good parts of a typical novel. It was like watching the entire series of The Walking Dead and skipping past that lengthy stay at the farm. The jump cuts have a miniscule negative affect to them however. While jumping through possibly boring and irrelevant dialogue and narrative, these jumps also leave out a few crucial bits of plot that leave the reader slightly confused and left to go back and read the last few pages to see if they did in fact miss those bits.
The characters are interesting, fleshed out, and I honestly felt some emotion when reading whether they lived or died. Mason does a great job at surprising you with pivotal moments in the novel. It keeps the reader guessing about what the next page will bring which is always a delight. It is also delightful to see the biblical references without having the book become too unrealistic. Kezzie herself is still a bit of a mystery, which makes me think about her even after reading the book. The zombie are also enjoyable to read because they are not your typical undead. Think zombie Energizer Bunny. Overall I enjoyed Kezzie of Babylon and I encourage anyone who enjoys horror or zombie books to give this one a read!
