Sixteen-year-old Leocadia arrives home from school to find her mom’s bloody body. Unaware that the killer still lingers, she rushes to her mother’s side, only to be grabbed from behind and then everything fades to black.
After a year of retrograde amnesia and battling personal demons, Leo’s dreams are getting worse—she’s starting to remember. More bodies are discovered and they seem to be oddly linked to her mom’s unsolved homicide.
When Leo allows her friend, Henry to drag her into the haunted Lucien Mansion, misty ghosts appear, ghosts that just might lead to her mother’s murderer.
Will Leo let her memories threaten her into a relapse or, will she fight to find her mother’s killer – only to become his next victim?
One thing that kind of bothered me was that she seemed to be getting her act together in everything except Henry. If a guy tried to force himself on me in a graveyard, I'd be cutting ties. Then when he tries again later, it's just getting weird and Leo's decision making problems seem to go far beyond drugs. She keeps trying to play it off as empathy, but oye. It was frustrating. I knew there was a point to it somewhere, which I'm glad the author addressed.
I found the pacing to be really great! I liked the switch of focus from Leo's home life, to her friendship with Henry, and then her friends/love interest at school. It kept me on my toes as it was neat to see her rediscover herself and get down to the root of all of her problems, which was her mother's grisly murder. Piece by piece, there are clues, red herrings and a few snags along the way, but Leo doesn't waver. It was then that I decided I could like her. I wasn't entirely thrown by the ending, but it was a heck of a fun ride!
